¡Si Se Pudo! MN House of Representatives Approves Driver’s License for All Bill
On Monday, January 30th, the Minnesota House of Representatives passed the "Driver’s License for All” bill by a 69 to 60 vote after hours of debate and discussion.
Thanks to the decades of work and perseverance of many Latinx leaders and community-led coalitions, this proposed legislation will ensure All Minnesotans have access to driver’s licenses. Many DFL legislators presented examples and community support that demonstrated how the passage of this bill will improve public safety, grow the state economy, and will treat immigrant communities with dignity and respect.
Proud Latinx State Representatives Aisha Gomez and María Isa Pérez-Vega, co-authors of the "Driver's License for All" bill, presented strong opening and closing remarks and asked colleagues to “help us re-write a new reality for so many immigrants that call Minnesota home”.
¡La lucha continua! The bill will now move on to the Minnesota Senate, led by State Senator Zaynab Mohamed, and if approved it moves to Governor Walz for his signature.
Our gratitude to so many Latinx and mainstream community coalitions who have worked tirelessly to provide access and rights to diverse immigrant communities who have been excluded from accessing a driver’s license since 2003.
