Ideas for managing stress

  • Take a deep breath. Inhale for a count of 4, fill your lungs with air, hold your breath for 7 seconds, and exhale for a count of 8.
  • Exercise regularly, even if it's something simple like walking for 15 minutes daily.
  • Dance with someone else, alone, or with a broom!
  • Have spiritual and/or religious practices. Pray, go to temple, meet with others to talk about the meaning of life. You can review a list of churches that offer sanctuary at isaiahmn.org.
  • Sleep, get enough rest for your age and needs.
  • Eat healthy. For example, if you feel discouraged, don't eat too many carbs... eat more fruits and vegetables!
  • Practice yoga.
  • Keep in touch with family and friends. This can be in person, on the phone, on Skype, or by texting each other. When we are afraid we tend to isolate ourselves, which only makes us feel worse!
  • Practice "mindfulness" also known as "full attention". There are many short videos on how to do it on YouTube.
  • Make it easy for children to participate in children's activities. Have a routine for them and don't involve them in the problems of adults.
  • Establish routines for yourself and have a plan in case of an emergency. Let children know that you have a plan for emergencies.
  • Stay informed about your rights using reliable sources. Avoid rumors and gossip. Focus on the things you can control and avoid worrying about things that are out of your control. Learn to differentiate between them.
  • Learn how to use technology and social networks so that you can stay in touch with family and friends in case of deportation.
  • Disconnect from social networks, radio and television when necessary to avoid feeling overwhelmed and more stressed.
